GRCA planning three fall tree planting workshops

This spring the Grand River Conservation Authority and its partner or­ganizations planted 451,000 trees in the watershed, making ut the best tree planting season in recent years.

 

Landowners are invited to take advantage of coming work­shops to learn more about plant­ing and caring for trees as well as the incentive programs that are available for the 2011 planting season.

The Landowner Steward­ship workshop is on Sept. 23, 6:30 to 9pm at the Marden community centre at 376 County Road 30.

Landowners with five to 100 acres in and around Guelph-Eramosa Township are invited to learn practical tips for putting sustainable prac­tices in place on their prop­erties. the Trees For Mapleton workshop is on Oct. 8, from 10am to 3:30pm at Clean Field Services Inc., 7668 Eighth Line, near Drayton

Find out how to care for trees and what assistance is avail­able to plant more of them.

The morning will be spent learning about tree pests and diseases, invasive species, how to plant more trees, and planting incentive programs. Enjoy a free lunch and prize draw. This will be followed by a bus tour to learn how to maintain healthy young trees in­cluding pruning and herbi­cide application demon­stra­tions.

The Trees Ontario Tree Planting workshop  is on Oct. 13, 7 to 9pm at the Grand Vall­ey community centre, 90 Main Street North Grand Valley.

The workshops will focus on tree planting techniques, ways to reduce the envi­ron­men­tal footprint as well as pro­grams and incentives available to landowners who are inter­ested in planting trees.

That includes the 50 Million Tree program, the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) and local programs. The workshops aim to build success off the most recent spring tree planting season that saw over two million trees plant­ed across southern Onta­rio.

Interested landowners are in­vited to attend and make con­nections with Trees Ontario field advisors, the Ontario Fed­eration of Agriculture, the Grand River Conservation Authority, Wellington Steward­ship Council, Green Legacy and other landowners.
