Grain elevator risk

Walter Grose, left, of the Wellington County Farm and Home Safety Association, and Matthew Musselman show off the grain entrapment display at the Wellington County Farm and Home Safety Association pancake breakfast on Feb. 23 at the Alma Community Centre. Grose was dressed up as “Safety Sam” to clown around with kids. Musselman used a model to show how a farmer could become trapped by flowing grain in just seven seconds – an accident that once happened to him. He was saved when the side of the elevator was cut open. Now, firefighters have access to a rescue tube that can be lowered around a person, allowing the grain around them to be extracted.  Photo by Phil Gravelle
