WELLINGTON COUNTY – Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 have been cancelled at both the Upper Grand and Wellington Catholic district school boards.
Notices were posted on both board websites in mid-September.
“Graduates of 2020, you faced a difficult final semester and your courage, strength, growth were great examples to our school communities,” said the letter by Michael Glazer, director of education for the Catholic board.
“We were pleased that we were able to celebrate our graduating students in new ways in the spring, through grad celebration signs and celebratory videos,” reads Upper Grand’s letter.
“We understand that this will be disappointing news.”
Both boards cite the dangers of COVID-19 and restrictions on gathering sizes as the reason why commencement ceremonies can’t be held.
Both boards are working out plans to deliver diplomas, awards and graduation packages.
Glazer said graduating students will also receive a scroll from the Minister of Education and the Premier of Ontario, “in acknowledgement of this special class of graduates.”
