Goodwin signs with OHL”™s Steelheads

Jeremey Goodwin of Fergus is one step closer to the OHL, after signing with Mississauga Steelheads.

The 16-year-old wasn’t drafted to the team, but rather attended a prospect camp in April.

“I did really well and then after that I was signed because they liked the way that I played,” said Goodwin.

The left winger has been playing hockey since he was five. He has played in minor midget with Guelph and Waterloo and now has his chance at the OHL (Ontario Hockey League).

He and his family weren’t sure what to expect at the camp because Goodwin was undrafted, but he said he got good vibes from the team.

“They showed a lot of interest in me and when I went down there it’s really professional and the coach was great at they just treated all their prospects really well and I thought it was a good opportunity for me,” he said.

When he found out Mississauga wanted to sign him, he was shocked, but he committed.

“I was in a bit of disbelief, shocked too,” he said

The Steelheads announced his signing on May 9.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I first went there, I knew I just had to go out there and do what I know I can do. If it was meant to be, it was meant to be.”

Goodwin hasn’t made the team yet, but he looks forward to showing off his stuff this summer.

“I hope I make the team and I can contribute to a successful team in Mississauga,” he said.

Steelheads’ general manager James Boyd said in a press release from the team, “Jeremey is a player that had a strong major midget season in Waterloo.

“He has shown great improvement over the past year and we are pleased that Jeremey has chosen Mississauga to continue his development in the OHL. He will bring size, mobility and skill to our existing lineup.”
