Golden voices of the silver screen shine

An impressive season of summer theatre continues next month at the historic Drayton Festival Theatre with Hollywood Sings, a sparkling tribute that highlights the most memorable music in the history of film.

On stage Aug. 5 through August 23, this production is a real treat for movie-lovers and theatre goers alike.

“The Drayton Festival Theatre is rolling out the red carpet this summer,” says Alex Mustakas, artistic director of Drayton Entertainment.

“Hollywood Sings is packed with everyone’s favourite movie songs performed by an all-star cast who will whisk you away to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood in a joyous musical revue.”

From venerable classics that are synonymous with the golden age of movie musicals, such as Stormy Weather, Moon River and Singin’ in the Rain, to contemporary film scores like Mamma Mia, Ghost, The Rose and Titanic, to a montage of Disney favourites, this production weaves a rich tapestry of romance, humour and nostalgia.

Conceived and created by David Rogers, who also gave us last year’s hit The Songs of Sinatra, Hollywood Sings is a celebration of life and love that’s guaranteed to put a song in your heart. Rogers brings his vast experience both on stage and behind the scenes to create a production that engages the audience at every turn. A star of major productions from Broadway revues to mega-musicals, Rogers is currently playing the lead role in Drayton Entertainment’s much-lauded production of Les Misérables.

At the helm of this dazzling production, David Hogan also brings a wealth of experience to Hollywood Sings. Hogan directed last year’s acclaimed production of Godspell at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse.

Other members of the creative team include music direction and arrangements by Mark Payne and lighting design by Catherine Soulliere.

Performing the popular vocals is an exceptional group of talented stars including Brian Belleth, Mark Cassius, Diane Chase, June Crowley, Susan Gilmour, Christine McKeon and Michael Vanhevel.

A superb five-piece band featuring Mark Payne on piano, Randy Rektor on guitar, Jesse Grandmont on violin, Dan Bearg on percussion and Mark Laidman on bass will perform an incredible score of enchanting classics and modern-day hits.

Hollywood Sings plays seven shows a week, Aug 5 through Aug. 23. Regular performance tickets are $42 for adults; $25 for youth under 20 years of age. Tickets for preview performances scheduled before the official opening and groups of 20 or more are $34. HST is applicable to all ticket prices.
