It could be a wild and woolly weekend this July as visitors mosey on down to the A Bar K Ranch.
What started as a small sideline additional agricultural event for this year’s rodeo, has blossomed into the Eastern Canadian sheep shearing competition.
Egremont Optimist Club member Ellie Adams said the weekend will feature the new sheep shearing event starting on July 14 at 8am.
Adams added that judges and shearers will be coming from New Zealand, the United States and across Canada for the event.
Shearers will be expected to shear 15 to 25 sheep per hour.
Topping off the event is the guest master of ceremonies, author and playwright Dan Needles, who will provide a play by play of the action.
Adams said Needles told her it was going to be the most exciting event he’s going to be doing this year.
In addition, there will be the traditional rodeo from July 12 to 15.
This year also includes three nights of concerts featuring the likes of Wendell Ferguson, The Good Brothers, Marshall Dane, George Canyon, Megan Morrison and Dean Brody.
Optimist Club member Dianne Schouten added that this year, the rodeo will also feature a three day farrier’s competition with demonstrations on Friday, with shoeing competitions on the Saturday and Sunday.
“You’ve got three competitions for the price of one.”
Schouten explained that this means there will be activities all day long and Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“It’s a great time and there is great food.”
Adams added camping is also available.
Schouten said, “The event is now in its 11th year and we’re still going strong. It keeps getting bigger and better every year.”
