As the number of Canadian fallen soldiers continues to rise, the local community is invited to participate in sending their condolences to the families of the brave soldiers who pay the ultimate price.
Thomson Funeral Home has partnered with the Royal Canadian Legion, Fergus Branch 275 and Elora Branch 229 to do just that.
The funeral home has donated a memorial station to each branch, and will donate a book of condolences for each soldier who passes away.
The community of Centre Wellington is invited to drop in to either branch and sign the book, leave a condolence, and participate in providing comfort and sympathy to the families of each fallen soldier.
Upon the announcement of the death of a Canadian soldier, a book will be available for a period of one week. After one week, the Thomson officials will collect the books and courier them to the families of the soldier who died.
“We have seen first hand what expressions of sympathy can do for the family of someone who has died,” said Lindsey Gray, Managing Funeral Director of Thomson Funeral Home. “With each passing of a Canadian soldier, we wondered if there was anything we could do to show the families of these brave soldiers that we are with them in their grief. We approached the Fergus Legion and Elora Legion with our idea and each branch was more than happy to provide the space to set up the memorial station.”
“The Fergus Branch posts the name, picture, and description of each soldier in our hall, so already we are memorializing these brave men and women. Now, the ability to sign a book and offer our condolences personally to the families, well it is the least we can do,” said Brian Bielby, president of the Fergus Legion.
Ashley Woods, president of the Elora Legion, said “Lest we forget … It is our commitment to these families that their loved ones will not be forgotten”.
The community is invited to the Legions each time a soldier dies, to sign the book, leave a condolence and pay tribute to the fallen soldiers.
