Fundraiser to help send local athlete to worlds

The Paisley Perrie Booster Club has planned an entertaining day of events for the entire family in support of a world-class local athlete.

The booster club, initiated by members of the Harriston branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, will host a Family Day at the branch on Aug. 25. Funds from the event will be used to assist with expenses for local in-line skater Paisley Perrie’s participation in the World In-line Skating Championships in Italy this fall.

Chair Norm Browns says preparations are “going very well” for the day, which will feature “many events for the young people,” as well as activities for adults. Games ranging from croquet to frisbee will be held for the youngsters and a dunk tank will also be part of the fun. A scavenger hunt will send participants around the town looking for items, either on foot or on roller blades and food and refreshments will be available on the grounds. A “mega bake sale,’ will be put on by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

The day will also feature non-competitive in-line races to give youngsters a chance to try out the sport for themselves. Registration will begin at 10:30am, at Tannery Park, with the races starting at 11am on Mill Street, which will be closed for the event. Registration will also be held at Tannery Park for the scavenger hunt, which begins at noon.

Funds will also be raised through a silent auction. Ross Wilkie, who is coordinating the auction, says response has been excellent, with over 100 items donated, including some interesting contributions from members of Town of Minto council. Bidders can vie for an afternoon of fishing and a barbecue at the home of either Mayor George Bridge or deputy mayor Terry Fisk, or a tour of any fire hall in Minto, including a ride on a fire truck and a pizza party for up to six, contributed by Minto councilor and local firefighter Rick Hembley. Auction items will be on display at the Legion from 2 to 9pm on Aug. 24 and 11am to 6pm., when bidding will close, on Aug. 25.

Wilkie says the auction items have been donated by businesses, organizations and individuals from across Minto and notes he hasn’t been turned down by anyone he’s approached for donations. In fact, the group is already halfway to their fundraising target of $8,000.

“It’s not just Harriston,” he states. “The entire Town of Minto is behind it.”
