Free tax preparation services make a difference

(NC) Certified General Accountants are contributing to communities across the province by helping low-income earners file their taxes through a free tax return program.

This supportive program is available to individuals with a gross income of less than $25,000 or families with a household income of less than $30,000.

The initiative aims to ensure that low-income earners, including qualified seniors and people with disabilities, have local access to tax experts providing free tax returns.

CGAs file thousands of free tax returns through the program each year and Tax Preparation Service centres are currently scheduled at nearly 40 locations across Ontario until April 30, 2014.

Appointments are scheduled in advance and those who meet the requirements are asked to bring:

– 2013-14 personalized tax return package (received from the Canada Revenue Agency);

– 2013 Notice of Assessment (received from the CRA after filing 2012 income tax return);

– copy of 2012 income tax return filed;

– all information slips received for employment, pension and investment income (T4s, T5s, T3s, etc);

– receipts for charitable donations, medical expenses, RRSP contributions, child care receipts, tuition fees, etc; and

– details of spouse’s and/or dependent’s income.
