Four-way stop authorized in Elora due to bridge construction issues

GUELPH – Wellington County council has approved the installation of a temporary four-way stop in Elora due to traffic issues resulting from bridge reconstruction.

Wellington Road 21 is currently closed at the Badley Bridge in Elora for the bridge replacement project.

Vehicular detour traffic is being directed from Wellington Road 7 across David Street West to Geddes Street (Wellington Road 18).

In response to safety concerns with respect to traffic and pedestrian movements at the intersection, county staff recommended the temporary installation of a four-way stop at the intersection, which requires a bylaw as directed by the Highway Traffic Act.

“The closure of the Badley Bridge uncovered a traffic snarl so a four-way stop was proposed and accepted by the committee at Geddes street and David street in Elora to help facilitate traffic movement there – and pedestrian movement too, we hope,” said roads committee chair Andy Lennox at the Jan. 30 county council meeting.

“The intent is that this would be in existence as long as the Badley Bridge remains closed for reconstruction and then it would be reconsidered at that time.”

Councillor Mary Lloyd said she favours making the move permanent.

“I am very happy about the four-way stop going in, albeit temporarily right now,” Lloyd stated. “I hope the numbers will show and prove that a four-way stop should permanently be installed there for the safety of the residents in that area.”
