Forty apply to fill vacant CAO position in Township of Wellington North

The township’s search for a new CAO has garnered 40 applications for the position,  which was vacated when former CAO Lori Heinbuch was terminated in May.

The application deadline was July 25.

The township hired Nigel Bellchamber, of N.G. Bellchamber and Associates, to undertake the hiring process.

Bellchamber declined comment on the number of resumes received for the position when asked by the  referring all questions to Mayor Ray Tout.

“It was a really good response,” Tout said of the 40 applications received. “I’m extremely pleased we received that many.”

The mayor said some of the applications came from people living in the area and many had experience in municipal affairs. “At least two-thirds have relevant municipal experience,” Tout added.

Bellchamber was chosen by council to spearhead the search in early July. Tout and councillor Andy Lennox were chosen by council as members of the selection committee.

Bellchamber is expected to narrow down the list of applicants and bring recommendations to the selection committee for consideration.

Skills being sought include:  strong communications skills to deal with the public, staff and council; the ability to balance and achieve multiple priorities; developing a culture of pride among staff; a skilled negotiator capable of resolving conflicts; and an understanding that council and administration are to be accountable and open to the public. First interviews with potential candidates will be done by Bellchamber and the committee, with those advancing to the second round to be interviewed by the full council. “The quality of the applications we received reflects on our municipality,” Tout said.

It is expected a new CAO could be in place by the end of September.
