Food bank aided by university students

The Clifford Food Bank got a helping hand from students from the University of Guelph.

Recently, a group of students enthusiastically forfeited one of their Saturdays to help the less fortunate.

Sharon Kaufman, a representative of the Clifford food bank, was amazed to see young people interested in delivering food to several food banks in the area.

Seven students from the Meal Exchange Program of the University of Guelph arrived in Clifford last month to unload cases of food. A cube van held all the deliveries for Guelph, Fergus, Arthur, Mount Forest, Palmerston, and Clifford.

Students at the university donate their meal points to the Meal Exchange and the committee in turn purchases cases of food at great prices to supply to area food banks in need.

The students stayed to enjoy light refreshments prepared by Marion Agla, Karen Dowler, and Elizabeth Bott. They were surprised to hear that a dozen families contact the Clifford food bank every month.

They were pleased to learn that their delivery close to Christmas helped feed 23 families who had signed up for the Christmas hamper program. Toys, mitts, toques, and scarves were also included.

Travis Clements-Khan of Kitchener-Waterloo; Nick Irvine, Aleisha Korga and Amanda Marshall of Guelph; and Julia Steele, Kim Bouffard, and Jacqueline Chalifoux, of Toronto were involved in this year’s project to help people they will possibly never meet.

The Clifford food bank committee is appreciative of all the donations of food and money that help the families in need in the community. Call 327-8588 if in need – or to offer assistance.
