Fly Fishing Canada’s (FFC) 16th Annual National Championship raised over $10,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington.
On three competition days, June 6 to 8, 35 competitors from across Canada, and including two from the U.S., caught and released 1,135 trout on the Grand and Conestogo rivers, and the Upper Credit Trout Club pond.
In conjunction with the Championship, FFC held its annual Conservation Symposium, which showcased four speakers on topics involving conservation in the Grand River and area watersheds.
It was held appropriately at the Grand River Conservation Authority’s Belwood Lake Conservation Area, next to the Shand Dam.
FFC and the local organizing committee thanked competitors, volunteers, sponsors and the Upper Credit Trout Club.
Through sponsorships, donations and prize auctions, FFC raised net proceeds of $10,212 for the Centre Wellington chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada.
Fishing is one of the activities that “Bigs” and “Littles” take on together.
It gives the children a sense of accomplishment, promotes bonding time, and educates them about proper stewardship of our waters, say organizers.
FFC and its organizing committee looks forward to the next time the National Championship can bring sport and commerce to Centre Wellington and area.
