Five legacy Sugar Maples revitalized by Centre

CENTRE WELLINGTON – In early September, professional arborists from the Centre Wellington Arborist Association spent the better part of a morning trimming up branches and removing the dead wood of five ailing sugar maples on Nichol Road 15, just east of Salem Public School.

A press release issued by Neighbourwoods coordinator Toni Ellis states “These roadside seniors are part of a row of fifteen trees, all likely at least 100 years old. On first glimpse, every one of them appeared to be in fatal decline, but after inspection it was determined that five could be saved with qualified professional care.”

Ellis adds “Enter Tree Trust, a project of Neighbourwoods. The new program enables people flying to offset the carbon from air travel though the tax-deductible purchase of a carbon offset. Income from the program has already begun funding professional tree care for significant public trees in Centre Wellington. Members of CW Arborists Association – in this case, Baum Tree Care and Out of your Tree Care—have been hired to rehabilitate the trees.”

“Our community has really jumped on board Tree Trust, and is appreciating the chance to make a difference to our trees right here,” adds Ellis.

“Trees are an important ally in our climate change fight. We can maximize their environmental benefits by not only planting new trees, but also by extending the lives of our legacy trees which, because of their size, function so splendidly as carbon sinks.”

The township will be planting a number of native trees to replace the ten trees that have reached the ends of their lives.
