First anniversary of New to You store

Groves Hospital Volunteer Association’s New to You thrift shop is celebrating one year in its new location.

How time flies with fun, making money for the hospital and enjoying being part of a great team of volunteers, said Clare Palmer, manager of the store.

New to You is having a celebration and invites the community to join on Oct. 3 at noon at the store on 950 St.  David Street for cake, a beverage and some fun sales. After all the community has certainly  helped the store with donations, wonderful volunteers and supportive customers.

The year has been a very successful one with sales doubling over the revenue at the old store on the corner of St David and Black Streets.

Staff state they didn’t anticipate so many donations of used merchandise. They even had to purchase an additional storage trailer to accommodate books, housewares and clothing, Palmer said.

The store began by offering furniture for sale but it soon became obvious there was not enough space so it stopped taking furniture donations. Renovations of the old Ken Weeks dealership took approximately three months and streamlining operations took an additional six months. All is in place now and only minor tweaking of retail floor space continues to occur.

Staff is proud of the store’s achievements in the first year and hope to continue serving the community, not to mention making money for Groves.

The store is always on the lookout for volunteers, staff states.
