MOUNT FOREST — Wellington North firefighters will be lacing up their skates for a good ‘ol’ fashion hockey game against a team of Mount Forest Patriots alumni on Feb. 24.
The puck drop is at 7:30pm at the Mount Forest and District Sportsplex and doors open to the public at 7pm.
“Our firefighters in Wellington North were just kind of looking for something to do that was a team-building activity,” said Callise Loos, deputy chief for Minto Fire and Wellington North Fire.
“They’re into hockey so they were trying to get a charity hockey game going.”
She added that one of the firefighters in Arthur is “good friends” with some executives of the Mount Forest Patriots, and that is where the collaboration unfolded.
“The Patriots obliged and thought that they would actually like to put together an alumni team … and that’s what got the ball rolling,” said Loos.
In between periods, there will be events such as:
– a special appearances from Sparky the Fire Dog and Patty the Patriot;
– “Chuck a puck”;
– “shoot to win” board; and
– 50/50 draw.
The local U9 minor hockey team may also be making an appearance on the ice to do breakaway challenges.
The Patriots pub will also be open. All proceeds from the bar and the draw will be given to Wellington North foodbanks.
Entry to the game is by donation and monetary or food donations will be accepted.
“[It’s] just a fun night out to have some fun with our firefighters, have some fun with our patriots alumni, and just meet the community and raise some money for the food bank,” said Loos.
