BELWOOD – Two garage-type structures were destroyed in a fire north of Belwood on Aug. 31, but the house was saved.
The call came in around 2pm for a garage fire on the 6th Line north of Belwood.
Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue sent firefighters from Fergus and Elora – about 20 in total – to fight the blaze.
“Prior to our arrival, the second structure caught fire,” said deputy chief Jonathan Karn.
“They were utility-type work sheds and were close together on the property. Part of the house, which was also close, had melted siding but it didn’t get worse than that.
“We provided exposure protection for the house and eventually put out the fire.”
The Arthur fire station sent a tanker to assist as well.
The homeowner had an excavator on the property, which firefighters used to knock down the burning buildings and move rubble to ensure the fire was out.
Karn said firefighters cleared the scene around 5:30pm, “which is fairly short for two fires.”
The fire was deemed accidental, but the incident prompted Karn to issue a reminder to people with burn permits.
“First, get a fire permit and then follow the rules of the permit as far as distance from structures when you have a burn,” he cautioned.
“And note the weather on the day you’re burning. Windy conditions can really impact a fire.”
