Fire prevention courses in Grey County

Barn fires are a major concern for Ontario farmers.

They can be a tragic event and the loss of livestock, buildings and equipment can be devastating.

Over a 7 year period from 2008 to 2014, there were 1,163 barn structure fire incidents in Ontario, with an average of $28.2 million in financial loss.

These costs include building structures but not equipment, agricultural products or livestock.

Approximately 40 per cent of all barn fires are caused by faulty electrical systems, which is one of the leading causes of barn fires.

Regular inspections and maintenance are key to reducing the the risk.

New technologies have become available that can help you monitor and inspect your farm buildings.

FLIR makes a series of different cameras that can detect gas leaks and electrical hot spots. There are also methane sensors available.  There are also devices that can control or extinguish flames.

Want to learn more about this important subject matter? Please attend the upcoming fire prevention courses at Grey Ag Services in Markdale.

There is a course available on March 21 from 1 to 3:30pm and the registration fee of $10 needs to be collected by March 17.

OMAFRA’s Jacqui Empson Laporte will demonstrate a FLIR camera that fits on your smartphone to help you identify electrical problems before they turn into something tragic.

John Van de Vegte, OMAFRA, will explain how fires start and how preventative maintenance on the barn’s electrical system can help reduce your risk of fire.
