BELWOOD – Two trailers were destroyed by fire at Highland Pines Campground on Aug. 12.
Deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn said the call came in around 10:30pm that one trailer was on fire and by the time firefighters arrived on scene, the fire had spread to the exterior of the trailer next door.
“It was well-involved when we arrived,” Karn said, adding about 30 firefighters from Elora and Fergus stations responded.
Damage, including the two trailers and two sheds on the property, is estimated at $700,000.
Karn said the fire prevention officer and OPP are investigating the cause, which as yet is undetermined.
Firefighter injured
One firefighter was taken to hospital with a minor injury and was subsequently released. No other injuries were reported.
Karn said staff at the campground were “fantastic,” leading firefighters to the scene and keeping other campers away while firefighters did their job.
No one was in the first trailer when the fire started and the occupants of the second trailer got out before the fire spread.
“With trailers, fire grows very quickly,” Karn said. “And because they are so close together, fire can spread quickly too.
“It really was very lucky the way things turned out.”
