The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Ajax of Guelph has announced Chief Petty Officer 2nd class Mitchell Horner, was selected as one of three Sea Cadets from across Canada to participate in an exchange visit to Australia.
Horner is a native of Fergus, and has extensive training in the Navy League of Canada’s Sea Cadet program. He is a fifth year Cadet and has attended several previous summer training courses in seamanship and marksmanship. He was required to pass exams within the Corps to qualify for promotion to his current rank.
The exchange selection process involves letters of recommendation from within the corps and the community.
Only the most deserving cadets are selected to participate based on their drill, dress and deportment, attendance at all types of functions including mandatory training and community service activities.
The exchange is for three weeks in April. They will be primarily staying in Sydney and will visit Canberra, Bondi Beach and Mt. Ainslie.
The Cadets will participate in leadership and team building activities, citizenship visits, the annual ANZAC Day parade and the Royal Australian Naval College.
The once in a lifetime opportunity is co-sponsored by the Canadian Cadet Movement and the Australian Navy Cadets.
Horner is expected to gain a wealth of experience gained outside the classroom while representing Canada, the Canadian Sea Cadets and his home “ship” RCSCC Ajax with pride and distinction.
