Fergus resident to walk in OneWalk to Conquer Cancer

Local resident Amanda Higgens will be participating in the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer on Team Love for a Cure for her fifth year.

On Sept. 7 and 8, the annual Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation is taking place in Toronto.

For the last 15 years, the OneWalk has raised over $168 million for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and is the Princess Margaret’s next generation fundraiser.

Amanda, a Fergus resident, walked for the first time in 2014, for The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, on Team Christine’s Road Home — a Team made up of long-time walkers.

Amanda’s mother-in-law, Christine Higgins, lost her battle to cancer after having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.

After battling with cancer Christine passed away  on May 10, 2014.

Much of Christine’s treatment took place at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Amanda says she remains grateful for the Princess Margaret for always going above and beyond to guide Christine throughout her cancer journey.

Amanda truly believes in the work being done at the Princess Margaret and just how much research has improved as a result of fundraising.

Amanda states she was able to see, firsthand, the improvements made in the last four years and is determined to continue to raise funds for further advancements.

Team Love for a Cure is made up of her husband, Joel, his two aunts, Karen and Judy, and his cousin, Monique.

Prior to her passing, Christine had also participated in The Walk, even while going through treatment.
