Charley Smeltzer, 13, of Fergus, plays for the Waterloo Gold Novice Ghosts, who won the Ontario ‘A’ Championships in Windsor on the weekend of July 24 to 26.
The team dominated the provincial qualifiers and the grand championship, winning all nine games and out-scoring its opponents 96-16.
The team has travelled throughout Ontario for league games and tournaments and also played a tournament in Canton, Michigan.
The team’s record for the season is 55 wins, eight losses and one tie.
The team is travelling to Victoria, BC to represent Ontario at the U-14 Girls Fastpitch Jamboree, where the Canadian champion will be crowned. The tournament runs from Aug. 5 to 9.
Smeltzer got her start playing ball in Centre Wellington for a few years and then was recruited to Arthur to play for an new competitive team, The Twisters. After a couple of seasons in Arthur she decided to try out for the Waterloo squad and made the team.
Smeltzer attended Salem Public School and Elora Public School. She is looking forward to starting Grade 9 at Centre Wellington District High School in September.
