March 27 is World Theatre Day – a chance to celebrate, reflect upon and cherish the freedom to create live performances.
The Fergus Grand Theatre is marking the event with an open house from 6 to 9pm.
“World Theatre Day doesn’t attract nearly the attention that it deserves in North America,” said Fergus Grand Theatre coordinator Eric Goudie. “We are fortunate to live in a part of the world where putting on a play doesn’t mean risking your life, and I believe that gives us an obligation to defend and promote theatre, both as an art form and as a tool for meaningful expression.”
The theatre will be open during the event for casual tours and exploration, including backstage and technical areas not normally open to the public. Volunteers will be on hand to lead tours, answer questions and tell stories about the history of the theatre itself, covering everything from memorable shows and great moments on stage to the various ghosts and spirits rumoured to haunt the darkened spaces of the building.
For people who are interested in getting involved in theatre (in any area, on stage or off stage) there will be materials available about several local theatre troupes, as well as volunteer opportunities at the theatre.
Because this is World Theatre Day, there may even be a few actors scattered throughout the building, offering impromptu one-minute performances to anyone who happens to come along. This is a free, informal and family-friendly event. Everyone is welcome.
