Fergus girl to play in “˜world”™s longest hockey game”™

Grand River Mustangs Pee Wee player Leah Fogarty and her father Steve were checking out the Grand River Mustangs website recently, when they came across an article about the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF)  “World Girls’ Hockey Weekend” Oct. 12 to 13.

What caught their eye in particualar about the weekend, which celebrates girls’ hockey across the world, was the “Long Game Initiative” – the feature event of the celebration.

The initiative will include over 40 games coast to coast in Canada, involving over 1,000 players, 150 coaches and hundreds of volunteers.

Players wanting to take part had to complete an application and their names were drawn for the right to play in one of the games. The Fogartys filled out an application and sent it in. As time passed and they heard nothing, they figured Leah hadn’t been picked.

But last week they were surprised to learn that wasn’t the case at all.

Leah was picked and she  will be representing Ontario girls hockey in a game that will be played across Canada on Oct. 12, starting in Newfoundland at 7am local time, and moving east to west to all the nation’s provinces and territories.

The score will be cumulative and by the time Leah plays her game at Century Gardens in Brampton at noon, the score will be reflective of five hours of hockey already in the books.

The goal is to set a Guinness World Records for the world’s longest hockey game.

Steve says Leah is happy to be a part of the game and represent the Grand River Mustangs.
