Kelly Detta-Hall is more than pleased with the turnout at the third annual Walk for CMT Fergus Fundraiser on Sept. 29.
Charcot-Marie-Tooth Awareness Month was held throughout September.
Detta-Hall, facilitator for southern Ontario CMT Action and Support, has spearheaded the support group and events in Fergus since 2011.
She has been involved with many initiatives to increase awareness, establish supports and develop medical resources for those living with or caring for someone with this disease in Canada.
CMT is the most commonly inherited neuropathy in the world. Although unknown to many, it affects one in 2,500. The group’s mission is to spread support groups, events and resources across the country.
Teams at the Fergus event last Sunday came from as far as Delhi and individuals as far away as Albany, New York (former Guelph residents).
Detta-Hall said it was a huge crowd at this year’s event, which was delayed “because the response was so overwhelming – it’s just amazing.”
And, as she welcomed participants and supporters to the third annual event, Detta-Hall said “this proves that the awareness is spreading.
“What everyone has done today is just amazing. This event lies close to my heart as myself and my family are affected by CMT – as many of the families are here today, both local and afar.”
Detta-Hall noted, “Last year we had 80 walkers, this year it is 151. Last year, we raised just over $6,500, this year we’ve already exceeded expectations in participation and monies raised.” Monday’s unofficial tally was $16,700.
With September being declared CMT Awareness Month, Detta-Hall said the hope is that this will strengthen CMT resources and the medical community as awareness starts to spread.
“As you can see it affects so many people.” She added the Fergus event is just one of many to come.
She noted the support of MP Michael Chong and the local community sponsors, as well as those who participated in some manner.
“We had three teams registered this year. I’d like to see more registered next year. It makes it so much fun to come together as a pack and do it as a team.”
Bonnie Edwards and her supporters (about 15) led team Nynna from Delhi, which raised over $750. The Detta gang (about 17 members) raised over $2,100. The third team, the Fred A. Hamiltons, with about 23 members, raised $4,890.
