Puslinch Fire Chief Steven Goode has left the building.
On May 17, Puslinch council offered words of encouragement and stressed how much he will be missed as the local fire chief.
Goode became the new deputy chief of operations with the Guelph Fire Department, effective May 15.
Councillor Ken Roth said “I really have mixed feelings … it’s Guelph’s gain and our loss.
“After talking to you previously, I think this is the best choice for you and your family … but you will be missed.”
“We’ll let you keep the uniform … it won’t fit anyone else,” Roth laughed (referring to Goode’s height).
Councillor Matthew Bulmer quipped, “Everyone makes mistakes. You went to Hillsburgh … and came back. You’re going to Guelph … maybe you’ll come back.”
Bulmer said, “You represent everything that this community stands for. I think you brought that into our fire department. You represent competence, but also compassion and commitment.”
In describing Goode’s level of commitment, Bulmer said, “it is not every fire chief that rides along in the truck.”
Councillor Susan Fielding also stated Goode had done an excellent job.
“You’ve always been very much part of the fabric of this community. I think that is important,” she said.
Councillor John Sepulis was also sad to see Goode leave.
“From the first time I met you, I could see you were an up-and-comer, and I can see further things for you,” he said.
Mayor Dennis Lever said, “I remember first meeting with you at a Tim Hortons over six years ago and talking about the fire department … what you thought might be challenges moving forward.
“We’ve gone through an enormous amount of change in fire and rescue services and you have led us through it with your fantastic work.
“You’ve done a great job and I think you’ll be a fantastic asset to the City of Guelph.”
Goode thanked council and added, “I’ve had the privilege to work with great staff, and a dynamic team that cares about the people we serve.” His comments were met with a standing ovation by councillors and staff.
