The home heating season has arrived.
If anyone suspects heating the house is costing too much, and not providing the level of comfort a family needs, there is help.
The Elora Environment Centre can send a certified energy advisor to perform an evaluation of the home, qualifying the homeowner for up to $5,000 in grants.
An evaluation determines where the house is experiencing heat loss and provides the owner with recommendations on how to reduce energy demand.
By completing the recommended retrofits, a house’s energy demand can be reduced by as much as 50 per cent, translating into significant energy savings, as well as significant reductions in green house gas emissions.
A typical recommendations include upgrading to a high efficiency furnace, insulating the basement or attic and completing air sealing work.
After the audit is completed, the homeowner decides which energy efficient upgrades he would like to make. Once the home has been retrofitted, the advisor will return for a follow up visit.
During that, the advisor will measure the increase in home energy efficiency, and also file for applicable grants offered by Natural Resources Canada on behalf of the homeowner.
Since 1993, the Elora Environment Centre has been bringing environmental solutions to communities, primarily around efficient energy use.
It has provided energy advice to over 25,000 homeowners and has obtained over $17 million in grants for its clients. As a not-for-profit organization it offers unbiased advice to homeowners on how they can best spend money to improve home energy efficiency and take advantage of grants that are available.
