Riverside Celtic College (RCC) is hosting a fundraiser ceili on Nov. 18 in support of a new scholarship to honour the memory of local musician Tom Kelly.
Tom Kelly was one of RCC’s first students fiddle and mandolin students when the college first started classes in 2003. Kelly passed away on June 4, 2011.
He was a passionate, talented musician and dancer, a nd a strong advocate for the college and traditional music.
Due to the generosity of a group of former RCC musicians and bandmates in an ensemble called Single Malt, (which included Kelly), a music scholarship has been created, the Tom Kelly Traditional Music and Dance Scholarship.
The launch of the scholarship will invite former and current members of RCC, as well as non-members to apply. Application forms will be available.
The all-ages ceili will take place on the upper level of the Albion Hotel, with live music and dance reels by the Kitchen Party Trio with Dan MacDonald on fiddle, Brian Taheny on banjo, fiddle and guitar, Jacob McCauley on bodhran, with ceili dancing caller Siobhan Harrop.
A step dancing performance will be performed by the Royal City Academy of Irish Dance.
The evening includes surprise musical guests.
The fall ceili takes place on the upper level of the Albion Hotel, at 49 Norfolk St beginning at 7pm on Nov. 18.
Tickets are $10 in advance by emailing evamccauley@sympatico.ca or $12 at the door. Children 12 and under are free. There will be a cash bar.
