Extra $30,000 to be used for work already approved

An extra $30,000 will give the township enough funds to pulverize and add gravel on Sideroad 15 from County Road 8 to Concession 16 – but no more.

On July 27, council approved a $15,050 quote from Brennan Paving, of Port Colborne, to pulverize Sideroad 15 from County Road 8 to Concession 6, a distance of about 5.4km.

The original intent was to place gravel on the section and then pave it in 2011. The township budgeted $30,000 for pulverizing this year and Lynch had said the township could use the extra funds to build up the crown of the road with gravel.

At last month’s meeting Mayor John Green said the township could delay work on the driveway at the PMD?arena and use those funds to do more pulverizing on?Sideroad 15, from Concession 12 to County Road 7.

But a report from Lynch last week showed the actual cost for pulverizing and placing 100mm of gravel just on the original section  – County Road 8 to Concession 6 – will be about $80,197, of which about $67,000 is for gravel alone.

Lynch explained that with $24,417 left in the maintenance gravel budget for the year, as well as $30,000 for pulverizing, the township is still almost $26,000 short for the initial section of Sideroad 15.

He suggested the township reallocate the $30,000 for the arena driveway to cover costs for pulverizing and adding gravel to Sideroad 15, from County Road 8 to Concession 6.

“Since the initial section of Sideroad 15 identified for 2010 upgrade will likely take significant pounding during future lagoon upgrades, it is recommended that this remain a priority,” Lynch said in his report.

Council unanimously approved Lynch’s recommendation. Councillor Jim Curry was absent. Lynch noted the move would “not allow any other work [not included in the budget] to be considered this year.”
