East Wellington Community Services held its seventh annual golf tournament last month July 21.
“When we started to plan this year’s golf tournament we were worried we would not be able to get the players out due to the tough economy,” said Dan Steeves, this year’s golf committee chairman. “We had already seen an increase in our food bank usage of 160% over the same period the previous year.
Despite those concerns, the group ended up having to turn golfers away, Steeves said.
“The financial support we received from local businesses in our communities was truly amazing as always,” he added. The Erin Lions Club helped pay for the golfers’ dinners. Allan Alls and Liz Creighton, of Re-Max, paid for the lunches and McKinnon’s TIM-BR Mart paid for the golfer’s pictures. Many local business donated auction items and businesses in Erin, Hillsburgh, and Rockwood sponsored holes and golf carts.”
There were 152 golfers that came out despite rain to make the tournament the most successful yet.
All the money raised from the event helps to provide programs and services to children, seniors, and those in need in the community.
