Organic heirloom seeds and seedlings will be for sale at Everdale’s Seedy Saturday May 3.
It’s been a very long and very hard winter, but the snow is finally melting and there is no better way to welcome spring then to start planting seeds.
After a small hiatus over the past few years, Everdale Organic Farm is proud to be hosting Seedy Saturday again – an opportunity for gardeners and families to visit the farm and buy organic and heirloom seeds and transplants for their vegetable garden. The event is one of many run nationwide and organized in partnership with Seeds of Diversity and its purpose is to bring together people interested in maintaining biodiversity and agricultural heritage through the power of sharing seeds and growing food.
All seeds and seedlings being sold on Seedy Saturday are either certified organic, or non-genetically modified and grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides.
“It’s an opportunity for community members to support their local seed growers, learn about gardening and seed-saving, and visit an organic farm,” explains Aabir Dey, program coordinator for The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security.
Everdale is an organic farm and learning centre that is also the regional hub of the Bauta initiative, a national seed-saving project led by USC Canada and Seeds of Diversity.
“We are supporting numerous seed-saving efforts across the province, and hosting a Seedy Saturday is our opportunity to showcase some of the great regional seed producers we work with.”
Not only can folks buy seeds and plants, they can swap saved seeds with others. Gardeners are encouraged to trade the best seeds from their garden at the seed exchange table and pick up some new varieties to try this year.
There will also be full-day seed workshops, tours of Home Alive! (Everdale’s sustainable straw bale model home) and kids’ activities.
Seedy Saturday will be held on May 3 from 1 to 5pm at Everdale, 5812 Sixth Line, Hillsburgh.
Admission is pay what you can and kids are free. For more information contact Aabir Dey at 519-855-4859 x103 or aabir.dey@everdale.org.
