AIDS Awareness Week events will take place across Canada, beginning Nov. 24 until the culmination with World Aids Day on Dec. 1.
The AIDS Committee of Guelph and Wellington County is hosting several events to bring awareness to HIV and to the highlight challenges that those with HIV face.
This year’s theme is Getting to Zero — zero discrimination, zero new infections and zero AIDS-related deaths.
The launch is a Red Ribbon Cookie campaign, prepared by With the Grain Bakery, across Wellington County at the following locations: Stone Road Mall on Nov. 24 from 11am to 2pm; Nov. 27 at Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex, 5pm to 7pm; Guelph City Hall Nov. 28 from 11am to 2pm; Quebec Street Mall, Nov. 29 from 11am to 2pm; Mount Forest Sportsplex, Nov. 30, 5pm to 7pm; West End Recreation Centre, Dec. 1, 11am to 2pm.
“HIV in 2012: Things Have Changed,” is a free workshop taking place on Nov. 27, presented by B.J. Caldwell, an HIV/STI prevention and outreach educator with the AIDS Committee of Guelph/Wellington (also serving Dufferin and Grey-Bruce counties).
Caldwell has been involved in the HIV field for over a decade and brings considerable knowledge and humour to the issue of HIV and STIs.
The workshop features a brief HIV 101 followed by an in-depth discussion about key issues in HIV (Who is getting infected now?, How long can people live with HIV? When does a person has to disclose their HIV status to sexual partners.)
The workshop is located at 10 Carden Street in downtown Guelph, from 6:30pm to 8pm.
For more information on the workshop contact B.J. Caldwell at education@aidsguelph.org or 519-400-4570.
A Candlelight Vigil will honour World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, beginning at 7pm at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Norfolk & Suffolk St. Everyone is welcome.
