Erin Radio gets a power boost

Erin Community Radio Inc., broadcasting from the second floor of the Erin United Church, received a new frequency and signal expansion on June 21.

The station applied to the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) for a frequency change and signal increase in January 2015. The application was approved last month.

Erin Community Radio Inc., which has been on the air since 2006, was broadcasting at 1,250 watts on 88.1 FM  – but has now jumped to 1,800 watts and moved to 91.7 FM.

“A new transmitter will be installed at the Erin water tower thanks largely to local resident Jay Mowat and Doug Bingley of Central Media Corp.,” said Ronia Michael, a member of the station’s board of directors.

The station offers “Alert Ready,” which is designed to deliver critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians through television and radio.

In addition, Erin Radio has installed an emergency back-up generator at the Erin water tower that powers the radio station and water tower in the event of a power interruption.

“We’ve come a long away in 10 years,” said Michael.

“We started at 50 watts and now we will be broadcasting at 1800 watts. That’s a big accomplishment for a small town radio station.”
