ERIN – In the spring, as one fair after another made the tough decision to announce cancellations, gardeners decided to give their green thumbs a new experience.
The weather cooperated and Conrad Wheildon, from Erin Fair’s Giant Pumpkin and Vegetable Committee, decided to run a virtual contest. New business owner Rick Sova, from Cornerstone Properties and Bloom Green in Erin, hosted the competition.
Competitors brought their biggest sunflower head, heaviest tomato and ugliest anything to the Garden Centre on Wellington Road 124 in Erin for the competition.
The winners include:
Heaviest Tomato
– 1st Barret Mucci: 2.83lbs;
– 2nd Betty Van Wyck: 2.11lbs; and
– 3rd Travis Farrel: 2.10lbs.
Largest Sunflower Head
– 1st Caroline Marshall: 21 inches;
– 2nd Brian Cleave: 19.1 inches; and
– 3rd Oliver Fisher: 18.5 inches.
Ugliest Anything
– 1st Joanne Borksok: 13.77lb Kohlrabi;
– 2nd Brandon and Ethan Reid – Sunflower; and
– 3rd Robert Craft – Corona Potato
Prize money will be handed out at noon on Oct. 10 at Bloom Green.
“Thanks to all who participated in our first virtual Erin Fair competition,” officials say.
