Erin council votes to retain 3% water service rate increase

ERIN  – Council voted to retain the three per cent water rate increase from quarter one into quarters two, three and four (March 1 to Dec. 31).

Since 2020 the water service rates have increased by 3% annually and in December a report was brought to council recommending the continuation of the 3% increase.

Director of finance and treasurer Wendy Parr presented the report and informed council of an ongoing water rates study being conducted.

“Due to residential growth and aging water infrastructure, a water rates study is currently being completed that will identify all current and future water system capital needs, estimate future operating costs over the next 10 years,” said Parr.

The study will also recommend and implement new rates starting in January.

Mayor Michael Dehn asked if the study would address the reserves and make sure a healthy reserve level is maintained to offset costs.

Parr confirmed the reserves are currently being updated and will be included in the study.

Council voted unanimously  and a bylaw was passed in favour of maintaining the rate during a regular meeting of council on March 27.
