Erin council approves $2.9-million renovation of Erin Centre 2000

ERIN – Council here has approved a bid for $2.93 million for renovations at the Centre 2000 community centre.

Town staff and consultant Tacoma Engineers reviewed five bids ranging between $2.93 and $3.5 million (before tax).

The consultant recommended CPM Construction Limited, the lowest of the bids.

With the tender exceeding the original budget by $1.2 million, the town is including the overage in its 2025 budget.

The project includes several upgrades to the community centre, including  electrical and fire systems, roofing, HVAC systems, and an added generator.

Revitalization of the main lobby, snack bar and Shamrock room will also be included in the project.

The Shamrock room is set to have the floor upgraded as the current floor is water damaged.

The addition of the generator will allow the Erin community centre to serve as an emergency centre.

Councillor Jamie Cheyne asked on May 23 whether funds taken from the budget will set the town back next year.

Town treasurer Wendy Parr said, “The 2025 budget will have to include this portion of money … we will adjust accordingly; we look at the bottom line, take all the asks, and then look at the tax impact.”

However, she added the community centre project could not be put off another year as the town’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program grant will expire in 2025.

As the Erin District High School shares the same building at the community centre, renovations will be paused while students are in the school, due to gas line removals.

Council unanimously approved the recommendation to award the work to CPM Construction.

Officials estimate the project will take about a year to complete.
