HILLSBURGH – The untimely closure of arena ice at the Hillsburgh Community Centre is being blamed on a refrigerant leak.
A “brine refrigerant leak” was discovered under the ice floor, according to a five-sentence notice posted on Feb. 16 to Erin’s website and social media pages.
According to the notice, ice needs to be removed for leak testing and radar or x-ray of the arena floor to find the source.
“Once the leak is found, the extent of the damage will be determined before it can be repaired,” the notice states.
The arena is a busy spot for ice sports throughout the winter season until April, when the ice would normally be removed.
“It is unfortunate that this issue affects so many of our community and visitors,” Erin Mayor Michael Dehn wrote in an emailed statement.
“Staff have tried to accommodate the Hillsburgh ice users at the Erin Community Centre, but with utilization of ice time [there] being high, not all groups could be accommodated, or not accommodated at their preferred time,” Dehn added.
The Advertiser has reached out with questions to township spokesperson Lavina Dixit but responses haven’t yet been received.
