Erin candidates withdraw from election

Two candidates for Erin councillor say they are withdrawing from the race.

Douglas Hodgson and Liz Armstrong both told the Advertiser they are no longer seeking a seat on Erin council, yet both of their names will still appear on the ballot for the Oct. 22 election.

Hodgson said he reconsidered his decision to run, but declined to provide reasons. He has previously done legal work for the town.

Armstrong expressed regret that she had to withdraw due to health reasons.

“Please don’t put your ‘X’ beside my name, as you will waste your vote,” she said in a media statement.

When a candidate withdraws after nomination day (July 27), their name cannot be removed from the ballot.

Town of Erin communications officer Jessica Spina said the onus is on the candidate to inform voters they are not seeking election.

As of Sept. 10 at 4pm, no one had contacted the town about withdrawing from the election, she confirmed.

She said the municipality could share such News on social media, but likely not at the town office on/before election day as the office is not an official polling station – it’s a ballot drop-off station.
