Erin and Hillsburgh stations respond to early morning report of chimney fire

ERIN – Erin and Hillsburgh firefighters were called out to what was initially described as a structure fire at a residence near Stanley Park on the morning of Feb. 14.

The call came in from a Park Boulevard residence at approximately 7:12am on Monday morning.

Soon after arriving it was determined to be a chimney fire, Erin Fire Chief Jim Sawkins said in a phone interview.

“A wood stove [was] on fire, [they] saw fire coming out the roof so that was a two-station call,” he explained.

Station 10 in Erin and Station 50 in Hillsburgh were initially called out but Sawkins couldn’t provide an estimate of how many firefighters responded.

“Once Station 10 arrived on scene, they determined that it was contained within the wood burning device, the wood stove and they cancelled Station 50,” he said.

After extinguishing the fire, Sawkins said the homeowners were instructed not to use the wood stove until they were able to have it checked and cleaned.

Sawkins said the units that remained on scene cleared out around 8am.

“It would’ve been contained inside the appliance so it’s really probably just a cleaning issue,” Sawkins said of the damage estimate, adding there were no damages to the actual structure.

“It’s that time of year that everybody should be getting their chimneys cleaned,” Sawkins urged residents.
