Erin’s first Seedy Saturday, held on April 7 at the Erin United Church, was a great success.
“We’re excited to see such a huge crowd,” said Martin Rudd, one of the event organizers.
“A lot of people showed up with seeds they had collected from their own garden,” said Jen Edwards, founder of the Erin Seed Library.
Visitors were able to trade their vegetable or flower seeds at the seed exchange table or they could borrow seeds from the Seed Library.
“We had a lot of new sign-ups,” Edwards said, smiling.
Seeds and other gardening related items were also for sale.
Many visitors asked questions and learned tips such as how to save seeds.
Children were busy making paper plate sunflowers decorated with real sunflower seeds, colouring or playing tic-tac-toe with painted rocks that looked like bugs.
“It was a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to having another Seedy Saturday again next year,” Rudd said.
Cash donations from the event were given to the Erin United Church (for providing the location) and the Seed Library.
All “leftovers” from the seed exchange table will be re-packed and added to the Seed Library’s pick up box, which is located at the Erin library inside Centre 2000.
“There is no charge for borrowing seeds,” Edwards explains.
“Just sign them out, grow them, and then hopefully you can harvest some seeds to give back to the Seed Library at the end of the season.”
