The Eramosa 4-H beef club held its first meeting of the year on April 10 at the home of Allan and Janice Wallace.
The meeting was opened with the 4-H pledge, followed by a few icebreaker games lead by leader Jason Schill to get to know each other.
Once everyone was well acquainted, leaders Allan Wallace, Jeanine Moyer and Scott Bessey led a discussion on parliamentary procedure, after which members put their new skills into action for the club elections.
Luke Hannam was elected as club president, with Danielle Nyman serving as vice president. Cole Bessey was elected as secretary, and Owen and Cole Hannam will share the role of press reporter.
Once elections were closed, the club discussed this year’s theme: animal care.
Each meeting will focus on the care of beef animals, including feeding, grooming and handling.
As part of their final project this year, each member is responsible for keeping a photo journal of how they raise and care for their beef calf over the course of the summer.
After each meeting, members will be assigned to take five photos of their project; this meeting’s assignment is to take pictures of where the calf is kept and how it is housed.
At the end of the year, each member will be responsible for putting together a short presentation using the photos they have taken to show everyone how they raised and trained their calf.
After discussing this year’s project, Luke Hannam closed the meeting with the 4-H motto of “Learn to do by doing.”
The next meeting will be held May 15 at 7:30pm, at the Wallace Farm on Wellington Road 7, Elora.
New members are still welcome, and are encouraged to attend. If anyone has any questions, they can contact leader Allan Wallace at 519- 846-9712.
