Enthusiasts impressed with displays at second Quilts on the Grand show

The Grand Quilters Guild’s second Quilts on the Grand show turned out to be a gigantic hit.

People from the Toronto area, Centre Wellington and even as far away as Sudbury attended the show, where the more than 140 members displayed their work.

About 55 bed-sized quilts, plus wall hangings and other miscellaneous items using the quilting process, made up over 160 items on display.

One of the attendees remarked, “I have been at the best juried quilt show in Los Angeles, California and this one is a better one for its displays. They only had 40 quilts.”

The Grand Quilt Guild has been in existence since 1996. Although quilting is often depicted as a pastime for senior women, many younger people are involved. Ten-year-old junior member Beth Lang entered a quilt she put together under the guidance of Melanie McDougall.

Show chair Sue was pleased to see the number of people attending and the involvement of the community. There were displays in shop windows in downtown Fergus and Elora and the group thanked numerous sponsors.

The show featured six vendors, a tea room provided by St. John’s Anglican Church and a section for the quilt challenge.

More than 50 guild members were given a challenge to quilt something depicting a musical song and then show patrons matched the items to a corresponding song title.
