FERGUS – While work hasn’t officially begun on St. David Street North (Highway 6) in Fergus, the pre-work has and it offers a glimpse of what the summer will look like in terms of traffic.
The overall project includes replacing the water main, sanitary sewers and modifications to the storm sewers underground.
When that is done, the road will be reassembled with one lane of vehicular traffic in each direction, separated bike lanes both north and southbound, sidewalks, trees, signalized intersection upgrades and a new controlled pedestrian crossing at St. George Street.
The project will be completed in two phases: from St. Andrew Street to just north of Garafraxa in 2024; and from Garafraxa to Edinburgh Avenue in 2025.
Surface asphalt and pavement markings will be completed in 2026.
What residents are seeing now is work by Enbridge Gas, which has started gas mainline upgrades and expects to complete this work in April.
Truck detours include 7th Line to Sideroad 17and back to Highway 6 North; 2nd Line is also a truck detour from Highway 6 to 7th Line and so on.
Signage will be placed one kilometre before each of the detour roads.
Now that work on Beatty Line is complete, it can be used as a north/south alternate as well as Gartshore Street for in-town travellers looking to avoid the area.
