Twins Sophie and Lucas Poland held their 7th birthday party on June 7 but they weren’t given any presents.
Instead the Elora siblings asked all their friends to bring monetary donations towards Kylie Van Horne and Tim Anderson’s Southern Ontario Amazing Race (SOAR) fundraising effort for the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington (CFGW).
Coincidently, the birthday party took place on the last day of the SOAR weekend.
“If I was one of the (CFGW) kids, I would probably want somebody to do that for us,” Sophie said.
Sixteen children between the ages of six and seven years of age attended the birthday party and every child brought a donation. The birthday duo raised $410 for Van Horne and Anderson from their birthday “presents.”
During the party they talked about where the money was going.
“We talked about children who need money because they can’t go to camps like us and they can’t ride bikes and some people don’t even have a home,” Sophie said.
All of the children put the money they brought into a fishbowl, which was then given to Van Horne and Anderson the following day to give to the Children’s Foundation.
“I felt really happy,” Sophie said when asked how she felt about her friends bringing donations.
“And good,” Lucas added.
