ELORA – The Elora and District Skating Club has received $5,000 from Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, which will help the club reduce fees in January.
Shelley-Ann Morgan, director of marketing for the local club, said in a phone interview that due to public health restrictions the club has been struggling to make ends meet.
“Our enrolment numbers have to be down,” she said. “There are also limitations in the arena, so we’ve had to increase fees.
“This funding won’t completely get us back, but it’s keeping us afloat.”
In September, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities announced an $8-million relief fund to help sport and recreation organizations continue to deliver programming in 2020 and beyond.
The Elora club is among 668 organizations across the country to be provided with grant support through Jumpstart.
Morgan said the Elora club is trying to figure out how to showcase the skaters and what they have learned over the season.
The usual December performance has been cancelled and the March showcase remains up in the air at this time as well.
But the kids are learning and having fun, she said, and that’s most important.
