This village is about to take its place in Canadian history … just not as Elora.
Film crews were in Elora on July 13 as part of a film shoot celebrating 150 years of Canadian history.
Scenes shot locally depict Canadian soldiers fighting in parts of France and Holland during the Second World War.
The documentary film, entitled Canada – The Story of Us, is being produced for CBC by Toronto-based film company Bristow Global Media (BGM). It will be presented in a 10-part mini-series on CBC to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday next year.
“The epic adventure history series tells the extraordinary tale of the people, places and events that shaped Canada,” states the BGM website.
“The series will combine fact-based drama with stunning CGI animation, and feature interviews with prominent Canadians.”
Prior to filming in Elora, Centre Wellington’s chief building inspector, fire chief, public works and legislative services were informed of the filming. Letters were also sent out in advance to homes and businesses near filming sites.
On Victoria Street, the old Walser Factory ruins (Pearle Development property) was altered slightly to look like a WWII blocked road, including the placement of a rubble wall at the entrance (Ross St. and Victoria).
In one scene, a special effects crew “blew up” the rubble wall, allowing the soldiers to continue down the cleared road. Filming included the use of small mortars, air cannons, a few propane flame bars and small pieces of burning paper.
Areas of filming included West Mill Street, Carlton Place, Price Street, Henderson Street, and other areas of downtown Elora.
