The Elora Rocks team is ready to hit the ice for a fresh season of hockey, with the home opener set for Friday, Oct. 5 at 8:30pm against the Durham Thundercats.
The team is inviting area residents to get involved, not just as fans at the Elora Arena, but as sponsors, participants at fundraisers and even executive members.
General Manager George Anderson said there has been a good turnout at try-outs, which continue this week, with many players returning.
Any players still interested, and anyone seeking more information on sponsorships, should give Anderson a call at 519-498-7444.
He’s also looking for donations of prizes for their Oct. 6 golf tournament.
The team is entering its 101st season. They play in the WOAA (Western Ontario Athletic Association) senior league.
There is no age limit, but most players are in the range of early 20s to mid- 30s.
The team appeals to those who want to continue playing competitive local hockey after moving on from junior or university leagues.
Elora joined the league in 1993-94 and captured the WOAA Sr. “AA” championship three times – in 2004-05, 2006-07 and 2009-10.
The team ran into trouble a few years ago, pulling out of the 2015-16 season due to lack of players, but they have since rebounded.
“We’re slowly building the team back up again,” said Anderson.
The team finished last season with a playoff series against the Lucknow Lancers.
They won their first game but were eliminated after losing the next two.
