ELORA – Elora resident Tammy Lowe is back from the Governor General’s Leadership conference, a bi-annual conference offered to a select group of applicants to inspire leadership.
The conference was delayed two years due to the pandemic and Lowe, who applied for it in 2018, maintains it was worth the wait.
“I was humbled when I came home,” she said.
The event ran from June 3 to 17, with 250 participants splitting off into different groups and travelling around the country to learn from guest speakers and community organizations.
Lowe’s group of 14 headed to Manitoba, spending most of their time in Winnipeg.
Lowe is a registered nurse and staff member with the Ontario Nurses Association.
“It’s changed how I want to lead,” said Lowe on the conference, adding that it has motivated her to potentially take on a higher leadership role within her organization.
“I want to do that for change,” she said. “I want to make change, and I want to be a part of the change.”
Lowe recalled two organizations the group visited that were particularly impactful, one of which was Mama Bear Clan Patrol, which does community walks in Winnipeg, handing out food and water.
“It was amazing to see how a group of people could come together,” said Lowe.
Another impactful experience for her was witnessing the Downtown Community Safety Partnership’s work in Winnipeg’s core, connecting with local businesses to increase safety, which Lowe said was “really amazing to see.”
