HAMILTON – The Elora Mohawks are national champions for the first time in six years.
“It was a great week,” Mohawks general manager Kyle Goss said of the Founders Cup tournament, calling the event successful both on and off the floor.
The local Junior B box lacrosse team continued a winning streak that started in the spring, and went undefeated in the national tournament against teams from across Canada to bring home the cup.
Asked about tournament highlights, Goss responded “obviously the win at the end.”
The Mohawks played the final game on Aug. 25 against tournament hosts the Hamilton Bengals, defeating the home team 10-1.
Lead scorers for the Mohawks were Brinley Wilson, with three goals and an assist, and Evan McDougall with two goals and two assists.
The win marks the sixth time the Mohawks have claimed the national Junior B championship, and it’s the first time the team has won the championship since 2018.
Goss said the win is that much sweeter because the gold medal game was played against another Ontario team – one the Mohawks lost to before their 27-game winning streak started back in May.
“To be able to beat them, especially on their home floor, is the icing on the cake,” he said.
While a look at the final scores of the Mohawk’s games suggest the contests were one-sided, Goss said the numbers don’t tell the whole story.
“The scores did not show how good the competition actually was,” he said.
The team had a relatively short trip back to their home arena on Sunday night, where they were greeted by family, friends and fans who joined in the celebrations.
It’s too soon to say what the next season will bring, but Goss said there is good potential.
“We have the ability to return a lot of players … which is very exciting,” he said.
