Elora band to make Riverfest debut

Elora-based rock band Tipping Point will be hitting the Riverfest stage for the first time on Aug. 19.

“It’s going to be great,” said Tipping Point’s Matt Giblin. “It will be very humbling I’m sure and it’s something that … I’ve been building up to, I’ve been working very hard to get to the point I’m at in music.

“Now with this new band things are starting to go the direction I’ve always pictured it going.”

Tipping Point was formed last summer when Giblin was looking for musicians to form a band for a battle of bands competition.

“I went down to recruit some guys and we had four days to practice and we got together and ended up starting this group and we got first place,” Giblin said.

Though the band has had to replace a member Giblin said the sound and direction of the group never varied.

“We’re like rock,” he said. “We started off with a little bit of pop … There’s a bit of a bluesy kind of feel in there as well sometimes.

“But mostly rock, we love to rock out.”

Tipping Point includes Drew Dockrill, Rhys Bennet, Jon Scott, Giblin and Dan “Poppy” Poole.

The band will be part of the local showcase at Riverfest this year. The festival runs from Aug. 18 to 20 at Bissel Park in Elora and Tipping Point will play on the Saturday afternoon at 12:45pm on the Koop Stage.

“It’s our hometown,” Giblin said. “It’s just a great festival and it’s a good opportunity for us to perform around where we grew up or where we’re situated.

“And that’s where most of our strongest following is from the Elora area, Centre Wellington.”

The band is currently choosing the studio they would like to work with to produce an EP that will be available at Riverfest.

Giblin is looking forward to experiencing Riverfest in a new way.

“Just being a part of the whole atmosphere and being able to be on the artist side of it because I’ve volunteered there before, I’ve been there as a patron, as a fan, and now we’re performing,” he said. “It will be different.”
